&app; is an image viewer and browser
written for the GNOME environment. It lets you browse your hard disk,
showing you thumbnails of image files and view single images
of many different formats.

The most common image formats are JPEG and GIF. The JPEG format
is good for medium and big sized images because it has a high
compression rate keeping a good image quality.
The GIF format is used in Web pages for displaying little
animations or little static images.
Another important image format is PNG, this format is very
common on Unix platforms and is considered
a replacement of the GIF format.

&app; supports all this formats and many others, it also displays
GIF animations.

such as add comments to images, organize images
in catalogs, print images, view slideshows, set your desktop

<title>To Change Folder</title>

If you want to change folder you have two ways:

When using the location entry you can press

<title>To Sort Images</title>

To sort images in a different order use the <guimenuitem>Sort
images</guimenuitem> submenu in the <guimenu>View</guimenu>
menu, use <keycombo><keycap>Ctrl</keycap><keycap>R</keycap>
</keycombo> to reload the current folder, type
<keycombo><keycap>T</keycap></keycombo> to view or hide the
thumbnails in the images list.

<title>To Add a Folder to the Bookmarks</title>

Frequently used folders can be added to the bookmark list for rapid
access. Just go to the folder you want to add to the bookmarks and

</keycombo> or use the command
<menuchoice><guimenu>Bookmarks</guimenu><guimenuitem>Add
Bookmark</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.
To remove or rearrange bookmarks in a different order use the

It's highly suggested to move and copy image folders with
&app;. This is because if you move or copy folders with
&app; image comments will remain attached to images as
you expect, but if you move or copy folders with the file
manager or other applications you will lose your comments.

<title>To View an Image</title>
<para>
In order to view an image just click on its thumbnail and the image will
be visualized in the viewer pane. If the image doesn't fit the viewer
pane you can give more space to the viewer hiding the browser, this can
be accomplished double-clicking on the thumbnails or pressing the
<keycap>Return</keycap> key, pressing it
again the browser will be displayed again.
Another way of viewing a big image is to view it in full screen
mode, type <keycombo><keycap>F</keycap></keycombo> to
activate/disactivate the full screen mode.

<title>Redeye Removal</title>
<para>
Many inexpensive cameras have a flash that is too close to the camera lens.
As a result, the light from the flash may travel from the camera and be partially
reflected by a subject's retina right back into the camera lens. This causes
"redeye".

with redeye, select <menuchoice><guimenu>Image</guimenu><guimenuitem>Redeye
Removal</guimenuitem></menuchoice>. A new window will be launched. Move the mouse
pointer over top a redeye region, and click on or near it. This should remove the
red region, replacing it with a blacker region. If you are unhappy with the
result, simply click <guibutton>Undo</guibutton> to revert the previous change (or changes).
(Clicking <guibutton>Cancel</guibutton> will abandon all changes and close the window.)
Once you are satisfied with the result, you can click on more redeye regions, or
click <guibutton>Save</guibutton> or <guibutton>Apply</guibutton> to close the window.

Usually if you want to rotate an image you have to open the image with
an editor, rotate the image, and then save it. This works well for
image formats such as PNG or GIF, but results in a loss of
quality for JPEG images. (The rotation functions in
<menuchoice><guimenu>Image</guimenu><guimenuitem>Transform</guimenuitem>
</menuchoice> operate this way - with loss.)

If you want to rotate JPEG images without losing image quality,
select the images you want to rotate and choose
<menuchoice><guimenu>Tools</guimenu><guimenuitem>Rotate
Images</guimenuitem></menuchoice>. &app; displays the
<guilabel>Rotate Images</guilabel> dialog.

The files are automatically saved after clicking <guibutton>Apply</guibutton>.

In general, there are two ways to rotate a JPEG image. The first way
is to re-arrange the pixels inside the image file, using a "physical"
transform. The second way is to leave the image data alone, and simply
change the value of the Exif orientation tag inside the header of the JPEG file.
Not all JPEG files have Exif tags however, and not all applications
support them. If your image does not have Exif tags, the pixels will
be re-arranged inside the image file automatically, since that is the only
possible method.

If your image has an Exif orientation tag, and the <guilabel>Apply physical transform</guilabel>
checkbox is enabled, the physical transform will be used to re-arrange the image
data, and the Exif orientation tag will be reset to its default value
of "top left".
</para>

If your image has an Exif orientation tag, and the <guilabel>Apply physical transform</guilabel>
checkbox is not enabled, then only the orientation tag will be changed. The
raw image data itself will not be transformed.

in both the rotation and import dialogs.

<para>The physical transform of pixel data inside the JPEG file will not
degrade image quality (that is, it is lossless) under most conditions.
However, if the image dimensions (height and width) are not both multiples
of 8, some data corruption will occur along one or two of the edges of the
image. If there is an Exif orientation tag, you can avoid this problem
by disabling the <guilabel>Apply physical transform</guilabel> checkbox.
If you must use the physical transform approach with
images whose dimensions are not multiples of 8, &app; will allow you to
proceed despite with possible image distortion, but it will also ask if you
would like the trim the image slightly (by up to 7 columns and/or rows
of pixels) to remove the problem areas.
</para>

<sect2 id="gthumb-reset-exif">
<title>Resetting the Exif Orientation Tag</title>
<para>
The previous section describes how JPEG images can be rotated using two
methods (physical transforms or Exif orientation tag changes). &app; supports
both methods properly as of version 2.9.0. Some previous versions
of &app; auto-rotated images improperly when importing, by performing
a physical transformation without resetting the Exif orientation tag
to "top-left". These previous versions ignored the orientation tag when
displaying the images, so no problem was apparent (although the problem
was visible if other image viewers were used to view the same images).
Versions 2.9.0 and later respect this tag, so the incorrect rotation will be visible.
</para>

The <guilabel>Reset Exif orientation tag</guilabel> tool is provided to fix
this problem. Simply select the affected images, and apply the
<guilabel>Reset Exif orientation tag</guilabel> tool. This will reset
the Exif orientation tag to "top-left".

<title>To Create a Web Album</title>

To create a web album, view a folder or a catalog and select the images
that you want to include in your album. (The usual selection methods apply -
you can click to select one image, shift+click or shift+arrow to expand
the selection continuously, ctrl+click to add images one at time, ctrl+A
to select everything.) Then use the <menuchoice><guimenu>Tools</guimenu>
<guimenuitem>Create Web Album</guimenuitem></menuchoice> function.

The web album will be generated in the <guilabel>Destination</guilabel>
folder. The starting page of the album will be given by the
<guilabel>Index file</guilabel> setting - "index.html" is typically
used.

All web albums will consist of one or more "index pages" (which show
a series of small thumbnail images) and one or more "image pages"
(which show a single image at a time). If the <guilabel>Copy originals
to destination</guilabel> checkbox is enabled, the photo shown in the
image pages will link to a copy of the original image. If you
click this link, the raw image will be loaded in your browser (with
no accompanying HTML).

If desired, images can be scaled down if they exceed a certain size
defined in the <guilabel>Resize if larger than</guilabel> box.

The number of thumbnail images shown on each index page of the web
album is controlled by the <guilabel>Size</guilabel> row and column
boxes. Alternatively, all images can be forced onto a single index
page by enabling the <guilabel>use a single index page</guilabel>
checkbox.

Most themes will respect the row and column settings that you specify,
because they are based on HTML tables. However other themes (the BestFit
theme for example) use Cascading Style Sheets that automatically space
the images to make the best possible use of space. (If you resize the
browser window, the images will re-position themselves!) These themes
will not respect the row and column settings, but they will keep the
total number of images per index page to a maximum of ROW x COLUMNS
(unless the <guilabel>use a single index page</guilabel> checkbox is
enabled).

A <guilabel>Header</guilabel> and <guilabel>Footer</guilabel> may be
defined. These labels will appear at the top and bottom of every page
in the album. HTML markup may be used in headers and footers, as long
every '>', '<', and '&' character is preceeded by a
backslash. For example, "<hr/>" must be written as
"\<hr/\>". Also, the sequence "%d" will be replaced by the
current date. To make a literal backslash ('\') or percent symbol
('%') appear in the output, it must be entered as "\\" or "%%" in the
header or footer fields.

A <guilabel>Theme</guilabel> must be specified. The <guilabel>Theme</guilabel>
controls the overall appearance of your web album. To select a
<guilabel>Theme</guilabel>, press the <guibutton>...</guibutton> button

and <guilabel>Image Caption</guilabel> dialogs allow you to specify
what textual information (photo date, image size, camera model, etc)
will be displayed next to each image in the index and image pages,

are both left unchanged. The image will be displayed identically by
gthumb for both possibilities, but for maximum compatibility with other
applications this checkbox should be enabled.
